The Real Tuesday Weld
The creation of London, England-based singer-songwriter Stephen Coates, whose stated aim with the Real Tuesday Weld is to create music that is "understated yet poetic, romantic yet post-modern, English yet universal" and to "pass the sparkling style and champagne spirit of the 20s and 30s through a no-nonsense 21st century filter". The project was apparently initiated after former visual artist Coates was visited in a dream by pre-World War II crooner Al Bowlly and cult American actress Tuesday Weld. Through The Real Tuesday Weld, Coates attempts to replicate music as he heard it as a child, the sound of old 78rpm records drifting from an antique portable gramophone. His 2001 debut, Where Psyche Meets Cupid, explored the various faces of "love' via 30s-style music and hip-hop. The album followed three EP releases, the first of which (1999"s The Meteorology Of Love) was issued under the Tuesday Weld moniker before legal action necessitated a (slight) name change.
