b. Niatia Jessica Kirkland, 4 October 1989, Harlem, Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA. This US rapper was raised in Brooklyn, where she began performing at an early age (her father runs the Familiar Faces label). Kirkland was tagged as a potential breakthrough artist in her teens, and shortly after leaving high school she began working with producer James Chambers. She was signed by Jive Records at the start of 2007, and her debut single, the infuriatingly catchy teen rap track "Lip Gloss", broke into the US Top 10 in summer 2007. Further singles included the nursery rhyme sampling "G-Slide (Tour Bus)" and "Shawty Get Loose" (featuring Chris Brown and T-Pain), with the latter also reaching the Top 10. Her 2008 album debut, VYP: Voice Of The Young People, attempted, with limited success, to provide more substance to the glib pop rap of the singles, with "L.I.F.E." notably referencing her difficult childhood in Brooklyn.
