downthesun
The Kansas City, USA-based nu-metal outfit, Downthesun, features quite a few similarities to masked marauders Slipknot. Both bands originate from the Midwest, share the same record label, indulge in the same aggressive angst metal, and additionally, both groups are friends with each other. Bass player Lance "Kuk" Collier and electro-specialist Church were members of a previous band that opened for Slipknot during mid-1999, which led to the duo becoming fast pals with Shawn Crahan. When the aforementioned outfit split up, Crahan suggested that Collier and Church hook up with like-minded Des Moines, Iowa musicians such as drummer Danny Spain and vocalist Satone (the latter of whom was a former tech for Slipknot). Soon afterwards, the band was rounded out by additional members Aaron Peltz (second vocalist) and Bruce Swink (guitar), completing a line-up that Downthesun tends to refer to as "the six". Signed to Roadrunner Records, the sextet entered the recording studio with veteran metal producer GGGarth, with Crahan overseeing the proceedings. Downthesun's self-titled debut was issued during the autumn of 2002, as the band supported the album touring alongside Soulfly.
