Old And New Dreams
This group formed in 1976 and featured Ornette Coleman alumni Dewey Redman, Don Cherry, Charlie Haden and Ed Blackwell. They came together to play Coleman's music, particularly that of the early acoustic bands. By the mid-70s Coleman had become committed to expressing his musical theory of harmolodics through the medium of his electric band, Prime Time. Old And New Dreams set out to play in the spirit of, rather than recreate, the earlier acoustic groups by reworking compositions of the period as well as composing new numbers within the parameters of the Coleman style. The group experienced a great deal of success, particularly on the European festival circuit, indicating the enduring quality of Coleman's early musical output.
