Nils Petter Molvaer
b. 18 September 1960, Sula, Langev†g, Norway. Introduced to music at an early age by his jazz musician father, Molv‘r played several instruments but particularly liked the trumpet. When he was in his teens, however, he played bass, drums and keyboards in various rock bands, before coming to jazz and at this time returning to the trumpet. From the early 80s, his musical thinking moved along electronic lines with influences from musicians as disparate as Miles Davis, Brian Eno and Bill Laswell. He was also influenced by early hip-hop bands and the kind of thing that DJs were doing in performance. By the early 90s, Molv‘r, like many of his generation in Scandinavia, were caught up in the wave of electronic music that offered a distinctive alternative to the jazz styles coming out of America at that time. In particular, Molv‘r admired the musical styling of Jan Garbarek and other artists on the roster of ECM Records. Indeed, Molv‘r eventually recorded for the label and enjoyed some measure of popular success with ECM's EP, Song Of Sand, taken from Khmer. Molv‘r also composes music for dance troupes, for television, and for films.
