Matt Skiba (b. Matthew Thomas Skiba, 24 February 1976, Chicago, Illinois, USA) of Alkaline Trio and his room-mate Josiah Steinbrick of F-Minus began writing music together in 2004, but it was not until two years later that they made their project official. Skiba's lyrics touched on very dark and personal subjects, in a manner that was reminiscent of his work with Alkaline Trio. However, unlike the latter's popular punk rock approach, Heavens cast a much more gothic and electronic sound, comparable to UK acts such as Depeche Mode and Joy Division. The duo signed to respected punk label Epitaph Records and released Patent Pending in 2006. The album demonstrated the creative advantage of living together when writing music, and included some impressive songs, notably the single "Patent Pending", and "Heather". Both members continue to work with their own bands as well as touring as Heavens.
