Lullaby Baxter
b. Angelina Iapaolo, c.1970, Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. Although Baxter's family was musical, she was late getting started as a singer. In the late 90s, while working as a waitress at a Montreal restaurant, she was persuaded to sing to patrons. She found an immediate audience for her personal interpretations, which she delivered in a warm, smoky-hued voice. Her 2000 debut album Capable Egg prompted a tour of Canada but her career did not take off. Baxter married, had a child, and continued writing songs, something she had been doing for some years. She teamed up with pop duo Hercules, a project that did not last, then collaborated with various other musicians. In a band format (the Lullaby Baxter Trio), she attracted critical approval more for the sophisticated urban sensibilities of the material than for its distant kinship with traditional country music. Pleasing melodies and imaginative lyrics combine to form an elegant repertoire of original songs that echo the historic entity of country and American folk while outwardly displaying a thoroughly contemporary attitude and sound.
