The Voice Squad
Comprising tenors Fran McPhail and Phil Callery and bass vocalist Gerry Cullen, Irish group the Voice Squad provided a synthesis of traditional singing influences with their attractive 1993 debut, Holly Wood. Their treatments of folk staples such as "The Coventry Carol" (also released as a single) and "Annan Water" saw critics invoke comparisons with both the Watersons and Copper Family. The album's title, rather than being a pun on Hollywood, was taken from the village in the Wicklow Mountains where many of the songs were recorded - at St. Kevin's Church. The atmospherics of this recording space served to add further authenticity to the distinct rural nature of songs such as the reflective "The Parting Glass".
