Scott Matthews
b. 1976, Wolverhampton, West Midlands, England. Matthews began writing music with his older brother Darren at a young age before starting to write his own songs while working full time in a warehouse. After numerous solo gigs at various venues around the Wolverhampton area, Matthews signed a contract with independent label Sam Remo Records in 2004. His debut, Passing Stranger, was released in March 2006 containing 17 varied songs of blues, folk and rock. The beautifully melodic first single, "Elusive", was greatly reminiscent of Jeff Buckley, an artist to which Matthews was frequently compared. The single received much interest in the UK from BBC Radio DJ's Zane Lowe and Mark Radcliffe. By the spring of 2006 Matthews had signed a major contract with Island Records, to which two of his self-confessed main influences, John Martyn and Nick Drake, had also been signed. With the re-release of the excellent Passing Stranger in October 2006 the track "Elusive" went on to win an Ivor Novello award for Best Song (Music and Lyrics) in May 2007. This led to Matthews receiving attention and television coverage for his low-key but impressive performance at the Glastonbury Festival the following month. "Dream Song" and the title track were released as singles in 2007.
