Metro Area
So called with reference to the New York locality in which US DJ/producers Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani grew up, the Metro Area collaboration dates back to 1996, with the name coined in 1998. The two men found a shared enjoyment of the older styles (disco and boogie) blended in to the new (house and techno), and these influences were reflected in the 1999 release of their Metro Area 1 EP. The duo approached this and subsequent EPs as if making a mini-album, and tracks such as "Atmosphrique", "The Art Of Hot", and "Caught Up" garnered a large underground following. Metro Area also gave monthly parties in New York's Apt club, while Geist remixed for artists such as Rapture and Erlend Oye. The duo's much-anticipated debut album effectively served as a "best of" collection from the EPs, offering four new tracks in the meantime. Blending electronic and acoustic instruments, Metro Area featured live strings, flutes, trumpets, piano and layered vocals, evoking the sounds of Detroit, New Jersey and Chicago. The UK's DJ magazine awarded Metro Area their Album Of The Year award, at the same time expressing the hope that the songwriting talent displayed by Geist in particular would not go untapped. Their records have found themselves in the collections of diverse figures such as Gilles Peterson, Lottie, and Pete Tong.

We need more songs by Metro Area. One, although pretty cool, is not nearly enough! My fave is Miura (sp?) It's how I learned of the group
