Eric's Trip
Drawing its personnel from the Canadian fishing village of Moncton, New Brunswick, Eric's Trip formed in 1990 because, as they were keen to point out, "nothing much else happens there". The band's line-up featured Julie Doiron (bass/vocals), Chris Thompson (guitar), Rick White (guitar/vocals) and Mark Gaudet (drums), the latter replacing original drummer Ed Vaughan in November 1991. Their sound, self-described as "punk rock that isn't afraid to dream", first came to light on a series of cassette-only releases at the turn of the 90s. These transmuted into profligate 7-inch singles and compilation appearances, before landing on Sub Pop Records in 1993 for their long-playing debut (the first Canadian artists on the roster). Though their descriptions of their sound may have invoked notions of gentility, by their second album they were still averaging one minute per song - just enough time to crystallize a single idea around a simple riff. Lyrics concerned themselves primarily with small-town issues, unsurprising perhaps, as band members still struggled to hold down day jobs at the time, in Moncton, including working in a photo laboratory, record store and fast food outlet. After struggling on for a further two albums, Eric's Trip ground to a halt in 1996. Doironr continued performing under the Broken Girl moniker, while her bandmates went on to work with various low-key outfits including Elevator To Hell, Purple Knight, and Moonsocket. Eric's Trip re-formed in 2001 for a short tour. A compilation of live material dating from all periods of the band's career was released at the same time.
