Mariza
b. Mariza Nunes, 16 December 1973, Mozambique. Portuguese fadista, Mariza, has been fted as one of the most exciting new world music stars of the early twenty-first century. She has performed at New York's Central Park, sang at the opening ceremony of the soccer World Cup in Seoul, South Korea, and was awarded the prize for the Best European Act at the BBC World Music Awards 2003. She has been dubbed "the new Am lia Rodrigues" in comparison to the celebrated fado singer who died in 1999 and, with her distinctly bleached and waved hair, the charismatic singer has even been called "a kind of fado Grace Jones".
