The Rippingtons
This contemporary jazz group originally comprised Russ Freeman (b. Russell Donald Freeman, 11 February 1960, Nashville, Tennessee, USA; guitar), Kenny G. (b. Kenneth Gorelick, 6 July 1956, Seattle, Washington, USA; saxophone) and David Benoit (b. 1953, Bakersfield, California, USA; keyboards). The man generally recognized as the founder of the Rippingtons, Freeman discovered the guitar with the kind of inevitability that comes from growing up in Nashville. In fact, it was a studio guitarist friend of Freeman's father that gave him his initial encouragement. He studied at Cal Arts and at UCLA, developing the essential studio skills, releasing a debut album (Nocturnal Playground) in 1985.
