IQ
A performance art-based assembly who formed in Southampton, England, in 1981, having previously existed as the Lens three years earlier. By the time of their debut album's release the line-up had stabilized with Pete Nicholls (vocals), Tim Esau (bass), Mike Holmes (guitar), Martin Orford (keyboards) and Mark Rideout (drums). Taking their influences from jazz, blues, rock and reggae, they also interspersed elements of theatre and drama. Nicholls had some acting experience, the highlight of his early career being an appearance on children's television show Cheggers Plays Pop. Following the cassette-only Seven Stories Into Eight, his band's debut album received excellent reviews in the music press including the late Sounds, which ensured a healthy cult following. Moving away from their early gothic leanings, later recordings became further associated with the progressive rock movement and bands such as Twelfth Night. However, productive over the ensuing mid-80s, they rapidly acquiesced to the law of diminishing returns.
