Defunkt
This hard-funk act from the USA centers around trombonist Joseph Bowie (b. St. Louis, Missouri, USA) who rose to prominence as a member of the Black Artists Group, an avant garde collective, based in St. Louis, and patterned after the Art Ensemble Of Chicago. Defunkt drew on this "new wave' tradition but fused such radical jazz with the dancefloor punch of Parliament and Funkadelic to create a thrilling, invigorating style. Bowie, the brother of trumpeter Lester Bowie and Broadway arranger Byron K. Bowie, was an inspired frontman and several propulsive albums, notably 1982"s Thermonuclear Sweat, captured their exciting style.
