Following the demise of literate UK pop-rockers the Housemartins, singer/songwriter Paul Heaton formed the somewhat similarly inclined Beatiful South at the tail end of the 1980s. With Heaton playing off a series of female vocal foils over the years, the band racked up numerous UK chart hits. Though Heaton released his first solo album in 2001, he nevertheless kept the Beautiful South going into the 21st century, keeping fans guessing with an eclectic album of cover tunes in 2004.
