b. Michael Turner, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. One of a new generation of rappers to emerge from New Orleans in the mid-00s, Turner followed in the footsteps of his brother Darwin (aka Choppa) by taking his southern-styled party rap into the mainstream American charts. In 2003, with Choppa riding high nationally with the infectious "bounce" hit "Choppa Style", his younger brother launched his own bid for success by signing a contract with the local Bosshog Entertainment group. In the following two years, the self-styled Baby Boy Da Prince opened for acts including Choppa, 50 Cent and Juvenile. His own "The Way I Live" became a number 1 hit in his native New Orleans in 2006, its easy flowing assertion of identity chiming with the inhabitants of a city still rebuilding after the horrors of Hurricane Katrina. The nationally distributed Universal Republic label signed the rapper, leading to the release of Across The Water later in the year. The album built on the insouciant charm of the single to good effect, with "Naw Meen" and "They Don't Know" particularly noteworthy.
