Doudou N'Diaye Rose
b. 1939, Dakar, Senegal. Rose is a master of the tam tam or sabar drum (a two-foot high instrument with a sharp, dry sound). He is renowned in his own country as an innovative conductor, performer, composer and teacher and has worked with the National Ballet and National Orchestra of Senegal. He has also established his own music school which has broken from tradition by accepting and encouraging female students (Rose's daughters play alongside his sons in his drum troupe). Since 1985 his troupe has toured internationally and in 1991 recorded Djabote with producer Eric Serra. Featuring 50 drummers and 80 singers, the album was the result of a week of atmospheric live recordings made on the island of Goree off the coast of Senegal, and is notable for the thunderous sound created by the massed drummers and the chants and choral singing on the four tracks that feature the vocalists.
