Bunny Rugs
b. William Clarke, 6 February 1948, Mandeville, Jamaica, West Indies. Bunny Rugs' interest in music began when he sang in church during the mid-60s. He attended an audition at the Kittymat club on Maxfield Avenue, famous for being the site of Channel One studios. He was successful and subsequently joined Charlie Hackett And The Souvenirs band while simultaneously studying at the Jamaica School of Arts. In 1968, he moved to New York where he joined Hugh Hendricks And The Buccaneers until 1971 and then formed his own group the Wild Bunch. Two years later he returned to Jamaica and joined Inner Circle providing lead vocals before Jacob Miller joined the group. Bunny Rugs later returned to the USA when he was offered a songwriting deal with Atlantic Records. In 1976, Third World performed in New York and invited him to join the band in place of Milton "Prilly" Hamilton. Bunny Rugs joined them for their second release, 96 Degrees In The Shade, which included their international hit, "Now That We Found Love". They maintained their crossover success with "Cool Meditation", "Dancing On The Floor" and "Try Jah Love", although by the late 80s individual members of the line-up had diversified into various solo projects. Bunny Rugs initially recorded with Philip "Fatis" Burrell, but he also worked with Trevor Douglas, Stephen "Cat" Coore and session work at Bob Marley's Tuff Gong studios. In 1994, Bunny Rugs released the headline-grabbing, "I'm In The Ghetto". The following year he recorded his debut album, Talking To You, which featured two remakes of "Now That We Found Love", one in combination with Mad Cobra and the other with Papa San. He also released the conscientious "Babylon Calling", a cut which proved particularly popular in the dancehall. While maintaining a successful solo career Bunny Rugs continued to perform with Third World.
