Ugly Casanova
Although most people know the early twenty-first century experimental alt-country outfit, Ugly Casanova, to simply be a solo outlet for Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock, he would like the public to believe an outlandish story regarding its origins and purpose. Supposedly, one night during the summer of 1998 at a Modest Mouse show, an overzealous fan, named Edgar Graham (aka Ugly Casanova) forced the members of the band to listen to a few original songs he had penned. They were so impressed with Ugly Casanova's songs that they met up with him at the tour's end to aid in the recording of them, but soon afterwards Mr. Graham suddenly disappeared, never to be heard from again. Instead of letting the songs go to waste, Brock assembled a group consisting of members of other outfits (including Red Red Meat's Brian Deck and Tim Rutili, Black Heart Procession's Pall Jenkins, and Holopaw's John Orth), and recorded these songs under the Ugly Casanova moniker. In 2002, the quintet issued their debut album, Sharpen Your Teeth, via the Sub Pop Records label, and toured in support of the release during the summer.
