Charlene
b. Charlene Duncan, 1 June 1950, Hollywood, California, USA. Duncan joined Motown Records in 1974, teaming up with producer Robert Miller for a series of commercially unsuccessful pop recordings. Her romantic 1977 ballad "I've Never Been To Me" flopped on release, but was reissued in 1982 and reached number 1 in the UK charts and number 3 in the USA. By now, Charlene had left Motown in 1980 and was to be found working in Ilford, Essex, England as a shop assistant. She re-signed to Motown in the wake of this success and recorded a series of albums, enjoying another chart entry in the UK and the USA with "Used To Be", a duet with Stevie Wonder. She subsequently left the label again in 1985.
