Stevie V
b. Steve Vincent, Hertfordshire, England. Vincent became a minor pop star in 1990 via his summer hit, "Dirty Cash", which spent two months in the UK Top 10, under his then operating title, The Adventures Of Stevie V. "Dirty Cash", with its insistent, cluttered arrangement, may not have pleased dance music purists, but its anti-materialism ethos did provide prototype commercial hip-house with one of its most notable crossover hits. Melody Washington, who featured prominently as the female vocalist on the hit, also duetted with Vincent on several of the tracks on his debut album. Vincent had begun playing the piano at five, subsequently learning bass and guitar. He formed a group at school, including one combo that included two of his teachers, called the Generation Gap. He then went to college, emerging with an electronics degree, becoming a freelance engineer afterwards. His first record release came in 1983, "Ease Your Mind", produced by Arthur Baker. It sold well in the USA but did not become a domestic hit. Now a resident of Biggleswade, he recorded his debut album in 1990, with guest appearances from Mantronix, Monie Love and the Jungle Brothers. Reviewers decided that the artist had not revealed sufficient diversity and the presence of two separate versions of "Dirty Cash' helped illustrate their arguments. Subsequent singles, such as 1991"s "Jealousy", were unable to repeat the success of his solitary major hit.
