Martha Reeves
Martha & the Vandellas were one of the grittiest of the Motown girl groups (lead singer Martha Reeves had a particularly big, gospel-trained voice). Their most epochal hit, 1964's "Dancing in the Street," was a party anthem that was also read, rightly, as being about the civil rights struggles then roiling the country.
