Mississippi Fred McDowell
Mississippi Fred McDowell was an early bluesman who was noted for his slide guitar technique as well as the song "You Gotta Move," later to be covered by the Rolling Stones. McDowell was actually from the North Mississippi region rather than the Delta, and reflected a more archaic harmonic conception of the blues, ostensibly closer to its African roots. He later enjoyed a substantial career during the '60s blues revival, and, in 1969, released a well-received album significantly titled I DON'T PLAY NO ROCK 'N' ROLL, which featured his first recorded electric guitar work and interview segments. Around this time, he also tutored Bonnie Raitt in slide guitar technique. Fred McDowell died in 1972.
