Tunng
Formed by Sam Genders and Mike Lindsay, this folk-inspired UK band has been routinely described as "future folk" and "folktronica", both futile attempts to pigeon hole their original sound. Lindsay grew up in Derby under the early influence of folk singer John Tams, and after a brief and unlikely flirtation with thrash metal found himself scoring soundtracks for soft porn on the Fantasy Channel. Genders introduced him to the soundtrack of 70s cult classic The Wicker Man, which became a profound influence on the duo's integration of folk with film samples and electronic sounds. Their debut, Mother's Daughter And Other Songs, was originally released in 2005 on a first UK pressing of 300 black vinyl copies but quickly caught on, earning critical praise and securing the duo a session on Gilles Peterson's Worldwide programme. Although experimental in approach, the album confirmed the duo's ear for a good melody, notably on "Beautiful And Light" and "Code Breaker".
