Originally formed in Long Island, New York, USA in winter 2000 as a punk pop act in the vein of Sum 41 and Good Charlotte, the emo rock sensibilities of the earnest, hardworking Bayside had long been evident by the time of 2007's mature The Walking Wounded. The title was a reference to the band's perseverance in the face of a Halloween 2005 road accident that claimed the life of their drummer John "Beatz' Holohan (b. 15 March 1974, d. 31 October 2005; drums) and broke the back of Nick Ghanbarian (b. New York, USA; bass). While touring 2005's self-titled album their tour vehicle strayed from an icy road in Boulder, Colorado, USA, leaving the band to grieve and take stock before founder member Anthony Raneri (b. Glen Oaks, Queens, New York, USA; guitar/vocals) and Jack O'Shea (b. Boston, Massachusetts, USA; guitar) bravely completed the tour acoustically with the assistance of ex-Staring Back drummer Gavin Miller and bass player Nick Testa. February 2006"s live Acoustic mini-album therefore caught them in reflective mood and contained "Winter", a heartfelt tribute to Holohan. By late 2006, after a post-high school trip to the west coast, Chris Guglielmo (b. Christopher J. Guglielmo, 1986, Wantagh, Long Island, New York, USA; drums) became a full-time member of the band.
