Cynthia Gooding
b. USA. Gooding was one of a number of New York-based folk artists to begin their recording careers in the early 50s with the newly formed Elektra Records label. Already a notable presence on the Greenwich Village folk scene as a guitarist and singer, she debuted on record in 1953 with the 10-inch albums Turkish And Spanish Folk Songs and Mexican Folk Songs. The albums were unusual in that Gooding sang the traditional material in the original language. She had learned the songs either through extant recordings or from visiting musicians, a process she documented in her scrupulously detailed sleeve notes.
