Stuart Hamm
b. 8 February 1960, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. This enormously talented bass player is probably better known for his work as a member of Joe Satriani's touring band, but has also released a series of fine solo recordings. Radio Free Albemuth (1988) displayed Hamm's virtuoso abilities as he tackled Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" and a Debussy composition, but also aired some fine jazz rock-flavoured material, showing admirable restraint in only adopting the lead role periodically, and concentrating on superb rhythm playing and song integrity as guests Satriani and Allan Holdsworth added colour. Hamm adopted a funkier element in his playing on the following year's Kings Of Sleep, with the stunning "Black Ice" demonstrating a remarkable ability to both drive and enhance a song through his dextrous rhythm-playing. Shotgun Messiah's Harry K. Cody added some excellent lead guitar, and worked with Hamm again, along with Eric Johnson, on The Urge (1991). Curiously, Hamm's career paralleled that of Satriani in his addition of lead vocals to some tracks on his third album, just as Satriani had done on Flying In A Blue Dream, but the album's outstanding piece was a live solo spot, "Quahogs Anyone? (119, 120 Whatever It Takes)".
