This all-female indie rock band was formed in 1999 by Jenny Hoyston (vocals/trumpet), Sara Jaffe (guitar), Bianca Sparta (drums) and Ellie Erickson (bass). Based in San Francisco, California, USA, the quartet had already completed work on a demo before choosing their unusual moniker. They made their debut on the Troubleman Unlimited label the following year, releasing a split single with the New York-based Black Dice. Other Animals, which was released in late 2001, struggled to strike a balance between the structured rhythms of "Tongue Tied" and "Marathon" and more experimental numbers such as "Fault List". The album failed to make much of an impact beyond the pages of sympathetic music magazines. A tour with the like-minded Sonic Youth and Le Tigre the following summer boosted Erase Errata's profile, as did the burgeoning popularity of similarly-styled post-punk, no wave outfits such as the Liars and Interpol. At Crystal Palace followed in 2003 but met with middling reviews. Jaffe left the band shortly afterwards, leaving the remaining trio to complete their third album, Nightlife, released on the Kill Rock Stars label in 2006.
