Allan Holdsworth
b. 6 August 1946, Bradford, West Riding of Yorkshire, England. The professional regard for this UK guitarist is illustrated by the range of people with whom he has appeared, including Igginbottom and Ian Carr's Nucleus. The end of Holdsworth's time with Nucleus coincided with a spell in Jon Hiseman's Tempest (in which he also played the violin). In its turn this overlapped with membership of Soft Machine. During the mid-70s he also played with Tony Williams' Lifetime and Gong, prior to forming the band UK with Bill Bruford, John Wetton, and Eddie Jobson. When Bruford left to form his own outfit, Holdsworth went with him. Typically Holdsworth soon left them, rejoining Soft Machine prior to going solo in the late 70s. After a fallow period Holdsworth seems to be more active and his work in the late 80s and 90s showed his former frantic sparkle, particularly his work with Gordon Beck and Jack Bruce. From 1990-91 he was a member of the successful pop fusion band Level 42. Most importantly, since the late 70s Holdsworth has recorded a number of fine solo albums. He is a guitarist who is unanimously respected by his peers.
