Anouk
b. Anouk Teeuwe, c.1976, Netherlands. Alternative rock singer Anouk spent a long apprenticeship as a live performer (as backing singer in a soul band) before her debut album, 1997's Together Alone, became a success in the Low Countries. Critical comparisons to Alanis Morissette were brushed aside by the artist, who was more keen to cite blues and soul influences such as Irma Thomas, Laura Lee and Etta James. Her career was guided by fellow Hague citizens George Kooymans and Barry Hay, formerly guitarist and vocalist for veteran Dutch rock act Golden Earring. Along with Golden Earring producer John Sonneveld, they produced Together Alone, and also had a hand in developing its songwriting. The first single to be lifted from the album, "Mood Indigo", was a Kooymans/Hay effort, and like the subsequent "Nobody's Wife" (co-written by Teeuwe herself and writing partner Bart van Veen), embraced Anouk's raw, gutsy style. The album also broke through in America, allowing Teeuwe to leave her job as a nursery school teacher.
