Jeff Black
b. Missouri, USA. Gravel voiced singer-songwriter Black pursued his muse the hard way, performing at low-key clubs and bars and holding down a variety of menial jobs while he built up his career. Raised in Missouri, Black was playing guitar and beginning to write his own material by the time he left school. One of his many jobs during this period was as a bouncer at a blues club, and the confidence he gained performing at the same venue helped him make the decision to tour further afield. By the mid-90s Black was based in Nashville and was performing live and in the studio with artists including John Prine, Blackhawk and Iris DeMent. In 1998, he entered the studio with several members of alt-country favourites Wilco to record his major label debut, Birmingham Road. One of the best singer-songwriter albums to be released that year, Black elevated himself above the mainstream with several finely crafted folk rock tracks such as "Ghosts In The Graveyard" and "What Do I Want".
