Wolf Parade
Canadian band led by two stalwarts of the North American indie rock scene, Spencer Krug and Dan Boeckner. Keyboard player and vocalist Krug (who is also a member of Frog Eyes, Sunset Rubdown and Swan Lake) was joined by ex-Atlas Strategic guitarist Boeckner and drummer Arlen Thompson in the early line-up of Wolf Parade, formed in Victoria, British Columbia in 2003. The trio completed a roughly recorded four-song EP that was released via their website. As the project began to take shape, Hadji Bakara (keyboards) and Dante DeCaro (guitar, ex-Hot Hot Heat) were added to the line-up, with the former joining in time to feature on the band's second self-titled EP. After signing a recording contract with Sub Pop Records, the quartet joined producer Isaac Brock (Modest Mouse) in the studio to re-record a number of the EP tracks and complete new material. A four-track EP and the full-length Apologies To The Queen Mary were released in 2005, with the latter earning a string of positive reviews across the board and earning Wolf Parade comparisons to fellow Canadians Arcade Fire. Their ability to fashion something new from well-worn indie rock influences was impressive, with Brock's clean production enabling the quality of songs such as "You Are A Runner, And I Am My Father's Son" and "I'll Believe In Anything" to shine through.
