Rosie Thomas
b. Michigan, USA. This Detroit, Michigan, USA-based singer-songwriter is equally renowned as a conceptual comic, whose stage persona is a neck-brace-wearing bespectacled pizza delivery girl called Sheila. Before inaugurating her solo recording career, Thomas sang with Velour 100 during the final stages of their career in the late 90s. Branching out into solo performance, Thomas was soon being celebrated as part of a new urban folk scene alongside male singer-songwriters such as Josh Rouse and Damien Jurado. She appeared on the latter's 2000 release, Ghost Of David, and the two duetted on "Wages Of Sin' for Sub Pop Records' Badlands: A Tribute To Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska. Her 2002 debut was in complete contrast to her work as a comic, and comprised 10 reflective songs exploring Thomas" childhood. Drawing on folk, country and indie pop in her sparse arrangements, Thomas fashioned a mini-masterpiece full of intimate details. The most compelling track on the album, "Farewell', was a piano-only lament detailing her parents" divorce. The follow-up albums Only With Laughter Can You Win (2003) and If Songs Could Be Held (2005) were further miniature masterpieces of the singer-songwriter craft.
