D4L
US rap group formed in 2003 by Fa-bo, Mook-B, Stoney and Shawty Lo, and the first act to break into the national charts from the Atlanta, Georgia-based "snap" scene. All four members had previously struggled to break into the music business with their own projects, and it was Shawty Lo who put up the money to finance D4L (Down For Life). The group hooked up with independent management company Dee Money Entertainment and appeared on a number of hit mixtapes circulating around the Atlanta underground, enjoying particular success with the hypnotic party rap hit "Betcha Can't Do It Like Me". The quartet's simple and melodic party rap style took off at the Bankhead-based club the Pool Palace, and with fellow Atlanta natives Dem Franchize Boyz and Trap Squad producing similar records the snap scene was soon being heralded as the next big thing to emerge from the south after "crunk". D4L's next release was even more effective and propelled them into the national charts. The basic synthesizer melody and repetitive chanted chorus of "Laffy Taffy" proved perfect for radio, and it was no surprise when the single completed its climb to the top of the mainstream charts at the start of 2006. The quartet's debut album was released through Asylum Records at the end of the previous year.
