Swedish singer-songwriter Jose Gonzalez scored a surprise hit with his debut effort, VENEER, which raced up the charts nearly two years after its 2003 release. Initially released to little fanfare, sales of the album rocketed after the track "Heartbeats" was used in a cell phone commercial in the U.K. and an oddly moving commercial for Sony products in the U.S. Gonzalez's fragile, melodic style topped polls on both sides of the Atlantic and drew favorable comparisons to Elliott Smith.
