Bun B
b. Bernard Freeman, 19 March 1973, Port Arthur, Texas, USA. Making his name as one half of prolific southern rap duo UGK, Bun-B has been a presence on the dirty south scene since the mid-80s. He worked with Four Black Ministers before joining Pimp C in UGK at the end of the decade. The duo released a series of gangsta rap albums that initially enjoyed success in and around their home state of Texas, before crossing over to the national charts at the end of the 90s. Bun-B also recorded with his side project Mddl Fngz during his time with UGK, and made a name for himself as a guest rapper on tracks by artists including Lil' Flip, Slim Thug, Beanie Sigel, and G-Unit. He launched a solo career after Pimp C's spiralling personal problems led to an eight-year incarceration in 2002 on an aggravated gun assault charge. Following the release of the mixtape Legends he completed the recording of his debut for underground hip-hop label Rap-A-Lot Records. Trill featured guests including Jay-Z, Ludacris, Too $hort and the Ying Yang Twins, although Bun-B retained enough of a presence to ensure the album did not descend into a star-studded mess. The album was a notable crossover success, reaching the mainstream US Top 10 at the end of 2005.
