The Academy Is
Formed in 2002 by William Beckett (b. William Eugene Beckett Jnr., 11 February 1985, Libertyville, Illinois, USA; vocals) and Michael Carden (guitar), this Chicago-based US rock band was originally known as The Academy. Beckett had previously recorded an album for the Chicago-based LLR Recordings label as Remember Maine. The duo fleshed out their new band with Adam Siska (bass), Adrian LaTrace Jnr. (guitar) and Mike DelPrincipe (drums), and this line-up recorded debut EP The Academy for LLR. Shortly after the EP's release, the band was forced to change their name to The Academy Is " for legal reasons. They signed a recording contract with Vinnie Balzano's Fueled By Ramen label (home to the successful Fall Out Boy) and completed the recording of their debut album, which demonstrated chief songwriters Beckett and Carden's penchant for melodic pop rock without any of the harsh edges of some of their contemporaries.
